Several months ago, one of my students came to me with a story that challenged me to embark on a project. In a NSE branch meeting, he began, a certain COREN certified Engineer was delivering a talk to a general section of younger engineers/undergraduates. Then he WARNED them to never take up the design of steel structures because the analysis/design/detailing is usually very complex and outsourced to high-value consultants based in New York, Canada, Dubai, London, Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, etc. He warned them to steer clear of steel, citing that he himself is afraid of steel. I could not believe my ears. I had to ask him again to be sure I was actually hearing this.
Now not very many engineers are competent in steel design. It is said that 1 in 10 structural engineers possess the required professional competence and/or expertise in the planning, analysis, and design of steel structures. This is because these processes require a level of rigorousness and thoroughness that not many are willing to offer. However, and thanks to advanced modern design software programs, these seemingly complex processes have been sufficiently simplified. One of such software in current usage is Bentley Staadpro.
